PROJECT 1
Proposal ( Week 1 - Week 3 )
We are going to study a cultural phenomenon, or a particular subculture that is perceived as ‘sensitive’, and “frame” our study within the chosen theme. The general theme is "Cultural Sensitivity in Design".
We have to convey this cultural aspect without altering the actual facts but within a presentable interpretation and adaptation that raises awareness from the viewers. We should produce some preliminary ideas on how to visually express our interpretation using design language. Each idea is to be supported by a short rationale. We are suggested to conduct visual research to help expand our idea generation.
Idea Proposed

After proposing the ideas with my group members, we decided to choose ' Kabuki ' as the title for our project. We're doing more research on Kabuki to better understand it for our proposal. Additionally, we've started discussing about some preliminary ideas for our project outcome, which include a Kabuki makeup filter, folding fan, emotion package, and comic. Following this, I sketched a basic concept for each of these ideas.

PROJECT 2
Field Study ( Week 4 - Week 5 )
In this project, we will conduct a data gathering collection process about the culture with relevance to the theme and our research objectives. We are required to collect visual, oral, textual and tactile
artefacts that would be part of our research materials for the ideation in Project 1 (proposal).
Our Data Collection Methods
1. Observation study
During our visit to Dotonburi, Shinsaibashi, Kyoto, and the Osaka Museum of Housing and Living, we came across things that related to Kabuki, and we took some photos for inspiration. Then, our group members went through the photos, summarised them, and then organised the summaries into slides for our presentation.
2. Online Research
We also did some online research on emojis and stickers related to Kabuki elements. Furthermore, we explored Hari Raya traditions and customs as part of our research for creating emojis to celebrate the occasion.
3. Google Forms Survey ( link )
We used Google Forms to ask questions about Kabuki in a survey. Then, we shared the survey link on our Instagram story to get help from our friends in answering. We got 92 responses in total. Below are the data analysis that I conducted :

Once we gathered the data, we proceeded to work on our presentation slides.
Below are the subtopics included in our slides :
1. Research Questions - Kerly

FINAL PROJECT
Visual Design ( Week 5 - Week 8 )
For the final project, we're tasked with using the data gathered during our research trip to create visual design outcomes that demonstrate our understanding and interpretation of "Framing." We need to consider cultural and aesthetic factors while incorporating our design knowledge. We have the flexibility to explore different directions and approaches, such as experimental design or art, using manual, digital, or a combination of both media.
We want to create a set of stickers called "Kabuki Eid Emojis" that combine Kabuki theatre with Hari Raya celebrations. These stickers will show Kabuki symbols mixed with traditional Malay designs for Hari Raya. Our goal is to make fun and meaningful stickers that people can use to share holiday greetings and emotions during Hari Raya.
In my part, I'll create a theatre building that incorporates elements of Hari Raya. Also, I will design three Kabuki face masks representing the expressions 😂, 😍, and 😭.
1. Theatre Building
I refer to a photo of Kabuki theatre ( Minamiza Kabuki Theatre ) that I taken in Kyoto and draft a simplified outline with a minimalist style.

For creating the kabuki face mask, I'll integrate the masks drafted by Charmine and adjust the facial expressions of these masks to reflect the top three most voted emojis from our survey data: 😂, 😍, and 😭.
2. 😂 Face mask
I referred to the two masks below as inspiration to design the face mask expressing the 😂 expression.
3. 😍 Face mask
I used a male Kabuki mask as a reference to design a mask that expresses the 😍 expression.

4. 😭 Face mask
I looked to the two male Kabuki masks below to inspire the creation of the mask expressing the 😭 emotion.

After creating these three masks, I have an idea to include them in the stickers by either having a person wear the mask or hold it in their hand. Masks created were initially placed on the body of the draft below.

Upon completing these ideas, I realised that the masks appear too small, making them difficult to see clearly. After expressing my intention to revert to the previous idea of solely featuring the face masks, my group leader suggested considering a variation where a Malay man wears the 😍 Kabuki mask while holding up a love sign. Consequently, the final sticker set will include this variation along with the other two face masks.
