INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 1

For this project, we will produce a 360° video experiment focusing on a topic of our choice, emphasising either storytelling or technical experimentation.

Idea:
I plan to create a 360° video that captures a day in my life as a university student, allowing viewers to experience my routine from their perspective. They will be able to explore various locations on campus, like classrooms, the library, and common areas. Smooth transitions will guide them through different scenes, making it feel like they are truly part of my daily life.

The video will have 10 scenes, each lasting about 3-4 seconds, giving a short but engaging view of my university life. Each scene will flow smoothly into the next, allowing viewers to quickly see different parts of my day.

Scenes, Timing & Locations :

  1. Driving to school (3 seconds) – In the car, on the road to campus.
  2. Walk to class (3 seconds) – Walking through the main campus walkway.
  3. In class (3 seconds) – Lecture hall or classroom
  4. Lunch with friends (4 seconds) – Syopz Mall
  5. Club & Society fest (4 seconds) – Unisquare
  6. Taking a photo in the photo booth (4 seconds) – Next to speaker corner
  7. Library doing assignment (4 seconds) – Library
  8. Get a snack (3 seconds) – Campus cafe
  9. Enjoying the lake view (3 seconds) – Sitting by the campus lake
  10. Going back home (4 seconds) – In the car, driving home from campus.

When I started using the 360 camera, I had some problems. I didn’t know how to use it well, the battery ran out quickly, and the connection to my phone kept cutting off. I tried filming for two days but still couldn’t get all the scenes I wanted. So, I changed my plan and filmed over two days. Now, I’ll put the best clips from both days together into one video.

In Week 3, Mr. Martin showed us how to edit 360° videos using Premiere Pro. We can only use a limited number of effects in our 360° video. ( Effect > Video Effect > Immersive Video )

Additionally, we can use transitions under the effects to make the 360° video flow more smoothly. ( Effects > Video Transitions > Immersive Video )

For my video, I used the VR Plane to Sphere effect (which correctly projects the text on 360° equirectangular footage) and the VR Rotate Sphere effect (to change the starting position of the video). After adding these effects, I tried different transitions to find the best ones. I used VR Mobius Zoom to go from Scene 1 to Scene 2, and VR Iris Wipe for the rest of the scenes.

When exporting the video, ensure the preset is set to VR Monoscopic Match Source Stereo Audio.

Final Outcome

REFLECTION

This project was a completely new experience for me because it was my first time working with 360° video. As Mr. Martin reminded us, the goal was not to feel stressed but to simply shoot what we know since this project is an experiment for us to explore. From the 360° videos I’ve seen, most of them were vlogs, which inspired me to create a vlog-style video for my project.

However, I faced several challenges during the shooting process. First, I wasn’t familiar with how to operate the 360° camera. On top of that, the camera’s battery drained very quickly, and the connection to my phone kept disconnecting, which made it difficult to capture the scenes I wanted and wasted a lot of time.

Despite these struggles, this experience gave me a better understanding of how to use the camera. I believe I’ve learned a lot from this project, and I’m confident that I can do better in future attempts.
