REFLECTIONS

Experience: Over the past 14 weeks in Advanced Typography, I've learned a lot and worked on some challenging projects. In task 1, we explored different typographic systems and refined letterforms based on an image. This helped me understand how different type systems impact a design and how to make text and images work together. Task 2 involved creating a key artwork and collateral, like lapel pins and T-shirts. I learned how to design a clear and elegant wordmark. Task 3 required me to create a complete font and apply it in real-world situations. This task was both challenging and rewarding, as it involved sketching, digitising, and using the font in practical designs. Despite feeling very tired, the effort was worth it.

Observations: During the course, I observed that experimenting with different typographic systems is essential for finding the right design approach. The “Type & Play” project made it clear that text and images need to fit together well to create a cohesive design. In task 2, I learned that a good wordmark must look good and be functional for various uses. Task 3 showed me how detailed type design is, requiring consistency and testing in different contexts to ensure the font works well. Feedback from others was crucial in improving my designs and taught me that design is an ongoing process of making adjustments.

Findings: From this course, I discovered that successful typography combines creativity, precision, and practicality. Task 1 taught me how to creatively adapt letterforms. Task 2 showed the importance of a well-designed wordmark for branding. Task 3 emphasised that a typeface needs to be versatile and work well in different situations. Overall, the class helped me understand the complexities of type design and its role in effective visual communication. Even though it was tiring, the experience was invaluable and made the effort worthwhile.
