TASK
Task 2 : Visual Analysis
This task requires us to assess, investigate, document and analyse the existing art/design work we selected in Task 1. We will study the design principles found in that work, as well as the size, placement, purpose, effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG goal that we have chosen. |
Below is the illustration that I have chosen related to goal no. 5 gender equality.

Title: Pink Tape
Artist: John Holcroft
Year: -
Medium: Digital
Size:-
Visual Analysis
ObservationThe illustration shows a dynamic scenario in which three women are pulled by pink ribbons and four men fly up to the sky. Both men and women are attired in professional clothing. The sky is painted with a few soft clouds against a serene blue backdrop. The city below is composed of various shades of blue. As for visual elements, the main colours are serene blues, pink, grey, and white. Overall, the colour palette used in this illustration creates a sense of balance. There are also a variety of shapes that contribute to the overall composition of this illustration. Rectangles form buildings in the cityscape, while organic shapes create the clouds. The flying men and converging lines create subtle triangular structures.

Analysis
This illustration is symmetrically balanced because everything is evenly placed. The pink ribbons below serve as the focal point, using a sharp pink hue to emphasise this illustration. The blue sky sets the stage for the pink ribbons and the professional attire to stand out distinctly ( Contrast ). The repetition of clouds is found from the top to the bottom of this illustration, creating a sense of continuity and rhythm throughout the composition. Movement is visible through the swirling motion of the ribbons and the dynamic poses of the four men in flight, adding energy to the composition. Harmony and unity are achieved through the combination of various visual elements, which are the individuals, ribbons, and sky all together, contributing to the overall impact of the artwork.

Interpretation
In this illustration, the pink ribbons reflect the limitations imposed on women by traditional gender roles and societal rules, while the men flying show the privilege and freedom that men enjoy when pursuing what they want. This emphasises the biases and limitations that women face in the workplace, limiting their capacity to achieve their full potential. Besides, the artist incorporates the concept of red tape into this artwork. Red tape represents the rules or barriers that hold people back. With both red tape and pink ribbons, this illustration shows how social expectations and rules create barriers for women, making it difficult to succeed. Overall, the artwork serves as a reminder of the unfair practices that women encounter, as well as the importance of equal opportunity for everybody, regardless of gender.

FEEDBACK
Week 5
Specific feedback: In Phase 1 Observation, I overlooked mentioning the colour grey for the clothing of both men and women, as well as the various shapes present in the artwork. Additionally, it was noted that I should include the proper credit line beneath the artwork, as provided in Task 1. Overall, I had written a sound visual analysis, showing my observation and understanding of design principles quite clearly.
