INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 2

Exercise 1 : Production Shoot

For this task, we need to film 7 scenes selected by Mr. Martin from the movie "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once." To accomplish this, we must form a production team. Mr. Martin has grouped us into teams of 10 members. Mr. Martin provided a Google Drive link with information about this task.

In week 5 of our practical sessions, we shot one particular scene to practice working together and determine how to effectively collaborate on filming all the scenes for this project.

Here is the scene that we need to film:

Before we began filming this scene, we quickly assigned and selected our individual roles within the production team. These roles included positions such as director, camera operator, actors, and lighting crew.

Our production crew list
Director: Diba
Assistant Director: ShaoHan
Camera Operator: Myra
Lighting Crew: Wee Han & Sue Zhiun (me)
Actors: JiaYi ( Waymond) & YiFan ( Evelyn )

As I will be working on lighting, Wee Han and I observed the light in the scene. We noticed that the light was shining on Evelyn's face, while there was no light on Waymond's face. So, we decided that the light stand needed to be positioned behind Waymond and angled towards Evelyn.

This is our final outcome for the first attempt in production shooting.

In week 6, we are going to film the 7 scenes just like a real production team. The production crew list is slightly different from the one in week 5.

Our production crew list ( Latest )
Director: Diba
Assistant Director: Wee Han
Producer: Diba
Director of Photography ( D.O.P) : Myra
Camera Operator: Myra
Camera Assistant: Sue Zhiun (me)
Lighting Crew: Shao Han & Sue Zhiun (me)
Art Director: Jin Rong
Boom Operator: Jin Rong
Location Sound: Jolin Ceria
Actors: Jiayi ( Waymond) ,Yifan ( Evelyn ), Chenxu ( Guard)

Before we started shooting, I carefully observed the direction of the lighting in all the scenes. By doing this, I could make necessary adjustments to the lighting setup.

Once everything was ready, we began shooting following the sequence arranged by the assistant director. We spent the most time shooting the first scene, which took about 1 hour and 30 minutes. I think this scene was the most challenging of all 7 scenes. The difficult part was that I had to make the flashing light very frequently to create a lightning effect. I found it hard to switch the light on and off at a very fast speed. But fortunately, I managed to get it right in the last take without any big mistakes.

For the second scene, I worked together with the director and camera operator to hold the jib for a zoom-out shot of the actor's face. I was responsible for pulling back the jib, which was challenging to keep stable during the movement. After these two scenes, we smoothly proceeded to shoot the others, taking us a total of almost 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete all 7 scenes.

Post-production
After filming the scenes, our producer sent us the footage and audio for our individual editing tasks. I downloaded them onto my laptop and renamed the files accordingly to make them easy to recognise.

I imported the files into Premiere Pro and began editing the footage into one cohesive video, ensuring the dialogue was synchronised correctly.

Mr Martin shared a tutorial on How to Auto Sync Audio with Video in Adobe Premiere Pro CC. In this tutorial, there are 3 methods to auto sync audio with video.
  • Merging - Select both the audio clip & video clip > Right Click > Merge clips > make sure the Audio button is clicked > Ok > Select new sequence from clip
  • Synchronise - Drag & Drop the audio & video into timeline section > Make them relatively aligned > Right Click > Synchronise > make sure the Audio button is clicked > Ok
  • Manual Syncing - syncing using the waveforms in the timeline. ( OPTION, - move left / OPTION. - move right )
I used both the synchronise and manual syncing methods to sync the audio with my video.

When there was an audio synchronise failure ( means synchronise method can't use ), I switched to manual syncing by adjusting the audio waveforms to match the original audio in the video.

Here are the results of syncing the audio with my video.

In week 7, Mr. Martin introduced us to the concepts of colour correction and colour grading. We learned that colour correction is a technical process aimed at making footage look natural and realistic, while colour grading is a creative process that adds atmosphere and emotion to the shots. For our production shoot video, we are required to apply both colour correction and colour grading techniques to enhance the overall visual quality and mood of our footage.

Before I apply colour correction and colour grading, I add some black screen transitions before certain scenes to make the video resemble a movie trailer.

Fig.1.10. Add black screen , Week 7, 6.6.2024

After that, I add text to the black screen transitions, just like in a real movie trailer. This helps to provide context and enhance the dramatic effect, making the video feel more professional and engaging.

Next, I incorporate background music from Artlist. I also apply a crossfade on the audio transitions to ensure they are smooth and seamless.

After completing the editing, I start applying colour correction and colour grading.

Exercise 2 :Tik Tok / Insta Video

For exercise 2, we are going to shoot a self-titled TikTok video. Here is the outline for my proposed TikTok video.

My content is a vlog of a one-day trip to Genting Highlands. I visited Genting Highlands with my friends on June 9, 2024, and captured some fascinating clips during our time there. I have 33 video clips from my album that I'll be using in my TikTok video.

Fig.2.1. Video clips from my album , Week 7, 9.6.2024

Mr. Martin recommended using CapCut for video editing. I began by importing all the clips into CapCut.

Fig.2.2. Video clips from my album , Week 9, 20.6.2024

Afterwards, I added the background music I chose, "Daisy" by Wave to Earth, to the video. Additionally, I included subtle captions to maintain a clean and aesthetic look for my vlog.

Once I had perfected all the details and made sure everything was just right, I proceeded to upload the video to TikTok.

REFLECTION

Being part of Project 2, Part 1: Production Shoot was incredibly exciting. It was a first-time experience for all of us involved in filming, and that added to the fun and energy of the shoot. I gained a newfound understanding of how every detail, no matter how small—like setting up lighting—plays a vital role in making a movie. This hands-on opportunity underscored the teamwork and meticulous planning required in film production, and it left me with a deeper respect for the art and craft of filmmaking.

Project 2, Part 2: TikTok/Insta Video was my favourite assignment. Editing the video brought back so many memories from that time. It made me realise how important it is to capture moments in short videos—they help us keep our memories alive and share them with others.
