EXERCISES

Week 1 / E-portfolio

We started by looking at different motion graphics on Pinterest to get some ideas and inspiration. After that, we picked our top three favorite motion graphics and wrote them down.

Week 4 / Kinetic Typography

Mr. Fauzi shared a tutorial video he created on how to make kinetic typography. In the video, he explained some basic techniques for animating text, making it easier for us to understand how to bring words to life using movement and other transform tools in After Effects.

After that, he also gave us a tutorial on how to do the remix for Project 1. He guided us through the steps and shared tips on how to creatively remix the animation we created in Part 1.

Week 5 / Advance Layers, Keyframing & Basic Animation

We are going to create a basic animation using advanced layers and keyframing. Below is a tutorial video by Mr. Fauzi that shows how to adjust layers in 3D and how to use camera tools to create smooth transitions.

First, we need to create a composition poster using the elements provided by Mr. Fauzi. Since I had already made a poster during Semester 1, I decided to reuse my collage poster for this exercise.

Before importing the poster into After Effects, I needed to resize the image to 1080px by 1920px using Photoshop and adjust the placement of each element to fit the new composition size properly. I also renamed each layer according to its content.

After that, I imported the poster into After Effects and began adjusting the layers in 3D space to prepare for the animation.

I created a simple animation using the camera tools in After Effects to add a zoom-in effect.

FINAL OUTCOME

Week 6 / Keyring overview

We were taught how to remove a green screen in After Effects. We learned to use the Keylight effect to cleanly remove the green background and make the subject blend smoothly into a new background. This technique is useful for creating more professional and creative video compositions.

Here is the tutorial by Mr. Fauzi that shows how to remove a green screen in After Effects:

Step 1: Import the video or image with a green screen into After Effects and turn it into a composition.

Step 2: Go to Effects & Presets and search for Keylight.

Step 3: Drag the Keylight effect onto the video or image layer.

Step 4: Use the eyedropper tool to select the green color in the background — this will automatically remove the green screen.

Step 5: Turn on the Transparency Grid to check if the background is properly removed.

Done!

REFLECTION

Through these exercises, I learned some basic techniques for using After Effects, such as working with layers, keyframing, and using camera tools to create simple animations. This gave me a good starting point and helped me understand how motion graphics are built step by step.

However, I also realized that there is still a lot I need to explore in After Effects. I’m not very familiar with the software yet, so I often spend a lot of time researching how to use certain features or tools. Sometimes, I have an idea of the effect I want to create, but I struggle to figure out how to do it and often can't achieve the result I imagined.

Even though it can be frustrating, I believe with more practice and time, I’ll be able to improve my skills and become more confident using After Effects.
