Adobe After Effects

Fig.1.1. Adobe After Effects , Week 10 , 28.11.2023

  • Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing.
  • It is used in film, TV, and web video creation.
  • This software is used in the post-production phase, and has hundreds of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery. This allows us to combine layers of video and images into the same scene.

Fig.1.2. Adobe After Effects , Week 10 , 28.11.2023

  • Adobe After Effects takes a different approach for creating movement.

  • Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterised art to create and tell a story.

  • We can integrate physical based media as well through photographs and videography.

Pre-composing in Adobe Photoshop

  • Photoshop : Transforming still images (graphic elements and photography) into moving images.
  • Photoshop is a platform to composite the layers.
  • All the layers need to be arrange and rename accordingly so that it will be organise and easy to be animated in After Effects

  • After Effects : Animating layers sequence from various elements and platform.

  • Adobe After Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application.

  • We can import elements such as images, video, vector and more into After Effects.

  • All the layer elements need to be organised and synchronised to the external software platforms such as Photoshop & Illustrator.
  • After Effects files does not embed its media, it links to it.

PRACTICAL

After Effects Exercise

1. Create new composition and configure the composition settings. Setting 1080 px (Width) x 1920 px (Height) and duration for 15s.

Fig.4.1. Composition Settings , Week 10 , 28.11.2023

2. Create folders and rename them to 6 sections.

Fig.4.2. Rename the folder , Week 10 , 28.11.2023

3. Import Photoshop file into After Effects under folder 04_PSD.  The photoshop file must import as Composition - Retain Layer Sizes and the layer option have to be editable layer styles.

Fig.4.3. Ways to import file , Week 10 , 28.11.2023

4. Create a keyframe animation to the layers using Position ( P ). Position controls the X and Y coordinates of the object, with the top left corner of the composition window being ( 0,0 ). Objects can also move entirely off the composition window, becoming non-visible.

Fig.4.4. Position the object , Week 10 , 28.11.2023

5. Create keyframe animation to the layers using Mask path. A mask is often a shape that reveals or conceals a particular region of a layer in our composition. We can use masking to hide or reveal a portion of a layer or an object.

Fig.4.5. Mask path  , Week 10 , 28.11.2023

6. Null object : Invisible layers in After Effects that can be used for efficient control of movement of other layers. Use the parent and link to have other layers follow the null object.

Fig.4.6. Null Object , Week 10 , 28.11.2023

7. Apply the Easy Ease keyframe assistant, which automatically adjusts the speed of change as motion advances toward and retreats from a keyframe. ( Keyframe Assistant > Easy Ease > Graph Editor )

Fig.4.7. Easy Ease, Week 10 , 28.11.2023

8. Addition of motion blur simulates the effect of fast-moving objects in real life, contributing to the overall realism and fluidity of the animation.
