Project 4: Self Titled

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT

Theme : Self-titled

Self-titled is an exploration project for the students to express their own individuality and reflect their personality into digital art self-expression
The main idea is to build up self-confidence and discover their interest.

In this final project, I will need to bring together the knowledge and skills acquired from three different modules: Typography, Illustration & Visual Narrative, and Digital Imaging & Photography. My goal is to create an integrated poster that showcases my abilities in each of these areas. I will use a custom font I've created (Typo), incorporate a self-portrait (DPI), and weave a related motive (IVN) through the font and image, resulting in a visually compelling and conceptually rich poster.

Part 1: Idea Development ( Week 11 )

1. Write a biography about myself

What's about myself

My name is Sue Zhiun and I’m 20 years old. I’m taking Bachelor of Design in Creative Media.

What is my passion?

My passion is listening to music. It's more than just something fun for me – it's like my life's energy. I enjoy all kinds of music because it takes me on a trip through different feelings and stories. Whether it's a slow song that comforts me or a fast one that makes me want to dance, music is like a friend that's always there.

What’s motivate me to achieve your dream?

My family and friends are super important in helping me chase my dream. They're like my cheerleaders, always cheering me on. When they believe in me, it makes me want to do my best. Their support is like a boost that helps me get through tough times and celebrate the good ones.

How do I want to visualise my dream into an artwork?

I would depict a sunrise over a calm sea, symbolising the dawn of true happiness. The artwork would use warm and happy colours to capture the essence of finding true happiness in life's simple and beautiful moments, creating a sense of joy and calmness.

2. Write a statement about my work

What's about my work

My work is a visual exploration of the rhythm of life, presented in the interface of a mobile music app. It's a way to show life's rhythm, just like the music we love, all in a simple and easy-to-understand design.

What's the concept behind it?

The poster is just like the music app on our phone, but instead of songs, it's all about my life. My life is the main melody, and the vinyl player symbolises my special soundtrack. The floating musical notes represent different parts of my life story. The "pause" button is essential, reminding us how nice it is to take a break. It's like a picture of finding a good balance and happiness in the everyday rhythm of life.

What's the message I want people to understand it?

I want people to understand that life is a bit like music. It's okay to hit pause when you need a break. This project is a reminder to find peace in the pauses, to take a moment and appreciate the beauty of your own life soundtrack.

What's my motto/ quote?
Life goes on, but it’s okay to hit pause when you need a break.

Part 2 : Design Direction ( Week 12 )

1. Sketching

2. Digital poster
As this poster incorporates three modules ( DPI, IVN, and TYPO), I'll break down the progression into three parts.
A) IVN
I created all the elements that needed in the poster using Illustrator.
Fig.2.2 Elements created in Illustrator , Week 12 , 12.12.2023

I designed my own font called 'Bongbloc' using Illustrator and Fontlab 7 in my Typography class.

C) DPI
I plan to incorporate the self-portrait below into this project.

I use quick selection tool to select my self portrait and refine edges in mask mode. Then, I add solid colour as the background and also adjust curve, exposure and hue/saturation.

After that, I crop a circle from my modified photo and position it within the vinyl I designed. Arrange all the elements according to my initial sketch. Set the textured wallpaper and my self-portrait as the background, adjusting the opacity as needed. Use the brush tool to craft a torn paper effect and sprinkle in some musical notes.

Final Outcome

Title : Life goes on

Artist statement : This poster not only mirrors the constant flow of life but also emphasises the importance of hitting the "pause" button when needed. Life, like a music that never stops playing, moves on with its ups and downs. This artwork, on the other hand, promotes the idea that it's totally fine to press the "pause" button - a gentle reminder that taking a break is necessary among life's never-ending beat. It acknowledges the challenges that we face and promotes the idea that taking time to pause, reflect, and recharge is not only acceptable, but also necessary. The journey of life may be ongoing, but the beauty stays in knowing when to hit "pause," allowing for a breath, a moment of relief, and the opportunity to enjoy the melody at our own pace.

Part 3 : Execution and Post Production ( Week 13 )

Import the final poster into After Effects.

Progression in After Effects:

Fig.3.2 & 3 Progression , Week 13 , 19.12.2023

1. Tonearm & Vinyl ( Rotation )
To signify the music stop, I rotate the tonearm, causing it to swing out beyond the vinyl. Conversely, when the music plays, the tonearm swings back towards the vinyl. I rotate the vinyl to make it spin.

2. Play button & Pause button ( Opacity )
I adjust the opacity to make the two buttons alternately visible.

3. Press button ( Scale )
To highlight the button press motion, I create three keyframes: the first one maintains the original size, the second one makes it smaller, and the third one returns it to the original size.

4. Progress bar ( Scale ) & Progress button ( Position )
To enable the progress bar to advance, I expand the x-axis of the bar. I align the progress button in accordance with the progress bar.

5. Musical notes ( Rotation & Opacity )
I rotate the musical notes back and forth to create a swaying effect. I make the musical notes appear when the music plays and disappear when the music stops by adjusting the opacity.

6. Heart ( Scale & Colours )
To emphasise the energy level, I animate the love form by diminishing it as it turns grey and then enlarging it back to its original size when it switches to red. In addition, when the love shape returns to red, I use three keyframes: the first keeps the original shape, the second enlarges it, and the third returns it to its original size, emphasising its significance.

7. Audio
I incorporate audio based on the desired situation to enhance the overall experience.

Part 4 : Submission ( Week 14 )

Final video

Title : Life goes on

Artist statement : Life, like a music that never stops playing, moves on with its ups and downs.

In the poster, the heart shape near the vinyl player represents our energy. When it turns grey, it means we're a bit tired and should take a break by hitting the "pause" button. After resting, when the heart turns red again, it shows we're refreshed and ready to continue. It's like a signal telling us when it's okay to take a breather, and when we're all set, we can keep going with renewed energy. The journey of life may be ongoing, but the beauty stays in knowing when to hit "pause," allowing for a breath, a moment of relief, and the opportunity to enjoy the melody at our own pace.
